Recreation Therapy

Recreation is a vital component to our residents overall health. Our recreation therapy department designs and facilitates programs to meet our residents social, physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual needs. We offer an array of large group, small group and one to one programs to ensure that all residents are given the opportunity to participate in meaningful recreation programs regardless of their limitations.

Upon admission we meet with residents to identify their interests, skills, abilities and needs and show them what opportunities they have to be an active member of our community at Alderwood. Residents who are unable to participate or chose not to participate in group programs receive one to one visits from staff and volunteers.

Our recreation department consists of a Recreation Programmer, Physiotherapy Assistant and part-time Physio and Occupational Therapists who works in collaboration with the Director of Recreation to develop, setup and deliver our programs to residents. Our volunteers are an essential part of our recreation program and provide countless services for our residents. Our programs include monthly birthday and themed parties, music and entertainment, hymn sings, inter-generational programs with children of all ages, church services and mass, exercise programs, bingo, trivia, knitting club, gardening club, community outings, pet therapy and much more.

If anyone has any questions or would like information on becoming a volunteer or making a donation to Alderwood, you can contact, Gaby Braun- Director of Recreation at (902)295-2644 ext. 226 or by email at
